The American Legion is the nation’s largest veterans service organization, dedicated to strengthening America through service to veterans, military families, youth, and local communities. Founded in 1919 by veterans returning from World War I, the organization continues to advocate for those who have served while promoting patriotism, responsible citizenship, and a strong national defense.
The American Legion’s mission is built upon four guiding pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. Through these pillars, Legion members work tirelessly to ensure veterans receive the benefits and healthcare they have earned, support active-duty service members and their families, foster patriotism and respect for the U.S. Constitution, and invest in the next generation through scholarships, leadership programs, youth sports, and community initiatives.
Beyond advocacy, American Legion Posts serve as community hubs where veterans and their families find camaraderie, support, and opportunities to continue serving others. Legionnaires organize charitable events, honor military service through ceremonies and funeral honors, provide emergency assistance, support disaster relief efforts, sponsor educational programs, and raise funds for veterans in need. Whether assisting a fellow veteran with a VA claim, mentoring young leaders, or volunteering in their local community, members of The American Legion remain committed to the organization’s enduring promise of “Veterans Strengthening America.”
