FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: American Legion Post 99 to Host Veterans Resource Fair.

The American Legion Post 99 & Post#199 are proud to host a Veterans Resource Fair on Saturday, September 20, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at 2101 S. McKenzie St, Foley, Alabama 36535. This free event is open to veterans, military personnel, their families, and the general public. Membership in the American Legion is not required—everyone is welcome.

A Mission to Support Veterans

The Veterans Resource Fair aims to educate attendees about the importance of suicide prevention and mental health awareness, particularly regarding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The event will provide valuable resources and foster discussions that can lead to greater understanding and support for those who have served.

Understanding PTSD

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, such as combat, natural disasters, accidents, or assaults.

Common causes of PTSD include:

*Combat and military experiences  *Physical or sexual assault  *Severe accidents

*Natural disasters (e.g., fires, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes)   *Terrorist attacks

Symptoms of PTSD can manifest in various ways, including:

  • Reliving the event: Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive thoughts.
  • Avoidance: Steering clear of places, people, or activities that trigger memories of the trauma.
  • Negative changes in mood and thought patterns: Increased sadness, detachment, mistrust, or loss of interest in enjoyable activities.
  • Heightened arousal and reactivity: Insomnia, difficulty concentrating, irritability, or engaging in risky behaviors.

The Reality of Veteran Suicide

Suicide remains a pressing issue among veterans. In 2016, approximately half of all suicide deaths in the U.S. involved a firearm, with suffocation and poisoning being other common methods.

Veteran Suicide Data (2021):

  • Alabama: 110–120 male veteran suicides; fewer than 10 female veteran suicides
  • Florida: 511 male veteran suicides; 35 female veteran suicides
  • Mississippi: 50–60 male veteran suicides; fewer than 10 female veteran suicides
  • Nationally: An average of 22 veterans lose their lives to suicide every day

(Source: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, https://www.mentalhealth.va.gov/suicide_prevention/data.asp)

Understanding the complexities of suicide and mental health is crucial. By raising awareness, promoting crisis intervention, and offering resources, we can take meaningful steps toward prevention and support for those in need.

Event Highlights & Available Resources

The Veterans Resource Fair will bring together a variety of organizations and services dedicated to assisting veterans and their families. Attendees can expect to find information and support in the following areas:

*Mental health services  *Community support resources  *Federal and state veteran benefits

*Local businesses that support veterans  *Veteran-owned businesses  *In-home care and assistance

*Legal services  *Insurance and Medicare guidance  *Medical care providers
